Making Assumptions

From time to time most of us will accept something as true or as certain to happen, even though we do not have absolute proof (it is possible definitive evidence of the truth does not exist.

Making assumptions can be expedient but it could also result in inappropriate behaviour or doing the wrong activity because things we not actually as you assumed them to be.

Speculation

A close cousin to the making of assumptions occurs when we form a theory or conjecture without firm evidence, i.e., speculate.  Combining speculation with assumptions can lead to a very dangerous combination.

Basically, inadequate quality of facts and inconclusive information leads us to actions that appear to be supported by feelings or beliefs that we can firmly trust, although in fact they are based a bit on smoke and mirrors, (i.e., what appears to be, not necessarily what is).

Easy and Simple

The prime motivation for acting on speculative information and assumptions is simplicity.  It is easier to assume you know the answer and proceed than step back, dig in and investigate.

We can achieve our goals by knowing how to proceed and assumptions provide us with that direction.  Sometimes it works and of course, our level of false confidence drives our ability to make assumptions comfortably.

The thinking goes “We are good at this, it’s unlikely we are wrong.  Why wait, why do more work?  Let’s get it done.”  Unfortunately, this approach does not always work out.  Worse when it misfires you can really make an ass of yourself (or worse).

Vision, Mission, Goals, Objectives, Strategies, Tactics

The goal of a non-drug induced vision is to inform the development of strategies that can underpin a series of objectives,  achieved through tactical practices, ultimately resulting in the completion of your mission (should you choose to accept it).

What a meaningful statement I just wrote, I must really know what I am talking about.

Bureaucratic Double Speak

On a stand-alone basis, the organization buzzwords employed in the first paragraph do have some relevance.  Strung together, I am not so sure they do much more than provide self-gratification.

I wrote the leading paragraph because I can, it sounds good and makes it appear that I know what I talking about.  In reality, though, I would propose it is a pretty empty statement.

Know Where you are going and the road to get there

Taken on their own merit these words do have more value than combined.  Each plays an important role in answering what you want to achieve and how you are going to do it.   (although goal/objective and strategy/tactics are virtually interchangeable terms)

Using them in a jargon form diminishes the effectiveness.  Most people recognize condescension versus meritous information. Why fool around with catch phrases.  Let us be clear, just say this is what we are shooting for and this is how we are going to do it.

  • Goal  – the sought after aim or desired result
  • Vision – elucidating the dream state, what is sought but not attained

  • Objectives – the plan to realize your sought after aims or desired results
  • Tactics –  the plan to realize your sought after aims or desired results
