What is it?

It’s not what you see that matters, you are impacted more by what you think you see.  One of your brain’s key functions in interpreting the data received via your eyes.

Vision is the ability to perceive things with your eyes (i.e., sight).  What you see is based on perception, not the truth.  However, from a personal perspective what you perceive is the reality of the moment so perhaps it is the truth.

Avoiding Confusion

We co-habit the world with a multitude of other people.  If everything we see is subject to personal interpretation rampant confusion will reign.

From birth we learn from our parents and others how to recognize and provide common labels.  For example we don’t see the colour green and label it as such.  It is learned.

The basic parameters for interpreting things, from labels to the definition of what it is, (e.g., thats an animal) is all part of the learning experience.

Perception/Perspective

Although we learn common names and meanings for the things we see obviously the learned items form just a baseline.  It is not possible for every single thing you in your lifetime to be identified and taught.

This need to figure out and define what we are seeing (i.e., not seen or experienced before) applies to everyone.  Hence there are times when we use our baseline knowledge to decide what we are seeing.

Our perception will have commonalities but each of us could see the same data input and arrive and dramatically different conclusions as to what we see.

When viewing and describing things to others keep in mind there is always room for interpretation and open discussion to clarify can help avoid confusion.

Vision, Mission, Goals, Objectives, Strategies, Tactics

The goal of a non-drug induced vision is to inform the development of strategies that can underpin a series of objectives,  achieved through tactical practices, ultimately resulting in the completion of your mission (should you choose to accept it).

What a meaningful statement I just wrote, I must really know what I am talking about.

Bureaucratic Double Speak

On a stand-alone basis, the organization buzzwords employed in the first paragraph do have some relevance.  Strung together, I am not so sure they do much more than provide self-gratification.

I wrote the leading paragraph because I can, it sounds good and makes it appear that I know what I talking about.  In reality, though, I would propose it is a pretty empty statement.

Know Where you are going and the road to get there

Taken on their own merit these words do have more value than combined.  Each plays an important role in answering what you want to achieve and how you are going to do it.   (although goal/objective and strategy/tactics are virtually interchangeable terms)

Using them in a jargon form diminishes the effectiveness.  Most people recognize condescension versus meritous information. Why fool around with catch phrases.  Let us be clear, just say this is what we are shooting for and this is how we are going to do it.

  • Goal  – the sought after aim or desired result
  • Vision – elucidating the dream state, what is sought but not attained
  • Strategies – The plan to achieve your aim
  • Objectives – the plan to realize your sought after aims or desired results
  • Tactics –  the plan to realize your sought after aims or desired results
  • Mission – the assignment that will enable achievement of your your political or commercial purposes

Whats Your Destination?

” Execution without vision is a nightmare”  – Japanese proverb.

Basically if execution refers to actions directed toward a result , if you cannot clearly visualize the result ( preferably before you begin the action) how will you know when to stop?

Arguably,  you can keep acting continuously always hoping to achieve the goal.  That is to say, without having a vision to guide the focus of the actions they are essential wasted.

And the reverse

” Vision without execution is just Hallucination “.  popularly attributed to Thomas Edison but more likely a slightly modernized version of Jefferson’s actual quote.

In this case you can visualize the objective but it will never be achieved.  Goals are not magically achieved and without action your dream is just that, a dream.

Keeping it Simple

Vision and execution are typical business jargon.  In very simple terms this concept can be analogous to taking a trip.

  • The first step is to determine where you are going.
  • Next you craft a plan on how to get there
  • And finally you act on the plan

You could take a trip with no destination ( probably end up as the vacation nightmare) or you could dream about the exotic destination you are going to visit.  Without a plan and then obviously not acting on the plan (because you don’t have one), it will never happen.

(Maybe like Dorothy you could click your read shoes together and mysteriously transport yourself to Kansas – only works well if Kansas was your dream destination)

The simple summary of this post is, the most sucessful way to get your goal is to know what it is and have a clear plan that you are acting on to get there.
