Choose Happiness

Sometimes I envy my friends and colleagues who are always in a bouncy and up mood whenever I encounter them.  Thinking about it though I realize they probably do not have anything that I don’t.

I understand intuitively and logically that they take pleasure in all they do and so their life is filled with joy.  It is just a choice and probably a simple one at that.  But everyone does not choose that path.

Simple but Complex

Choosing pleasure over pain, deciding it only makes sense to find the joy in everything, and behave accordingly does not seem to be the kind of thing rocket science is needed to figure out.

Yet, I find it requires effort to be happy.  Doubt, fear, worry to name just a few of the less desirable emotions seems to occur even when not desired.

This is not just a personal observation but widespread among people I regularly interact with.  It is too rare and always enjoyable to run into someone who has chosen happiness and joy.  You want to talk to them, the good feelings are contagious.

It would appear simple to choose to be in a constant state of pleasure yet, surprisingly, that does not appear to be the case for most folks.

Perspective

Each of us can choose our own particular attitude toward anything.  Our way regarding something, that is a point of view.  This is of course influenced by our environment and other people.

We need to work hard to choose the best perspective, perhaps the optimistic joyful view, when pitted against many obstacles.  This is why even though it is the logical choice we do not always choose a happy perspective.

The key is to pause and remember regardless of the circumstances, it is your choice.

Don’t forget to have fun

The purpose of our lives whether holistic to the entire population of the earth, individual or by cultural groups most likely includes a component of pleasure.

This should not be applied in the hedonistic sense, personal pleasure at the expense of everything else,  but for each of us life without pleasure to some extent will be quite empty and void.

Anytime

I have run into dissenters from time to time but my own philosophy is fun, laughing, joy are always appropriate.  Actually probably even more so in dire circumstances.

I my life on earth was not intended to bring joy (both to myself and others) than what?  I can imagine no other purpose and while times of adversity are sometimes unavoidable the ability to create fun is always within your grasp.

Appropriate Behavior

I will concede that social and cultural norms do put some limitations on when and how to have fun, but these can always be overcome, albeit gently.

Crashing a sober occasion like a bull in a china shop with joyous antics clearly is not appropriate but being somber and sad exclusively is not necessary.

I told appropriate amusing anecdotes at my parents funerals, in good taste and within acceptable context of the audience.   This went over exceeding well and I received many complements.

Don’t Let Calamity Overwhelm

Laugh through your tears, you will never regret it.  My own personal mantra, sadness should be a fleeting emotion, joy and happiness forever.

Bring a little humor and fun to everything you do, I guarantee you will never regret it.

A little Horseplay

Many of us kid around with our colleagues.   Sometimes we could take the “shots” in ways they are not intended and be offended.  Often this is unnecessary, no harm has really been done.

Friendly interplay like teasing and practical jokes are typically a sign of affection.  We rarely tease or joke with those we dislike.  It is when the kidding stops that I would worry.

Keeping it Fun

Humour and kidding around can contain a hint of truth and some messages for our consideration but this indirect way of passing information is more likely to have a positive effect and cause less pain.

Work , that is mental or physical effort focused on a specific purpose or result, is generally considered serious and treated as such by most of us.

Humour and other lighthearted attempts to make the environment around work fun can be create tools for motivation and even increasing efficiency.

Enjoy Yourself

While work is a serious endeavour, with accountabilities and consequences in does not have to be painful and without joy.  Kidding around,  exaggerating scenarios even using sarcasm can all lessen the sting of serious focused intense and stress causing work.

When someone is poking fun at you accept it with the good humour it is more than likely intended and perhaps even return the salvo.  Make the mundane interesting.

This is not to say you shouldn’t focus on the task at hand or put the majority of your energy into your work, but not surprisingly practicing little humour, joking , spoofing, etc can be a real energizing activity enabling you to work even better.

Humour Me

Much of our daily activities are conducted in a serious way.  We believe they matter and demand careful consideration before acting.  While being funny gives more behavioural flexibility and is, well “fun” it is often considered inappropriate for “serious” subjects.

Humour arises from a genial mood, it is very unlike the serious approach.  Being funny, as a general rule feels good both to the comedian and the audience.

Why Serious

If humerous behaviour is more relaxed and pleasant why do most of us spend the majority of our time in serious mode.  Most of what we deal with day in and day out is just routine.

That is not to say everything we do is not meaningful in some way, or why would we do it.  This is more about the way we go about getting things done.

In general any message or action can be couched in humour and as a rule this allows the recipients to be more relaxed and receptive.  This is not to say the humourous approach always succeeds but certainly success is more likely.

The key here is how the all parties feel.  When actions are relaxed and genial (the basic principle  of the humerous approach) everyone is more likely to feel good, this helps grease the wheels.

I prefer the lighthearted approach and work hard to make this my behavioural standard whenever possible.  Many view this approach as frivilous but then, overall, they probably don’t have as much fun as I do.
