Keeping the beat going

In 1967 a group of musicians got together in San Francisco and formed a band.  Musician union rules required they designate a band leader.  For no other reason than that they had to pick someone, Carlos Santana was chosen.

The band was named Santana and issued their first album, eponymously  named, in 1969.    The band went on to phenomonal success issuing a total of 24 albums to date, many with gold or platinum level sales.

Four of the founding members plus two additions formed the “classic” line up of the band – 1969 to 1971.  This period covered the issuance of the first three albums.  Since that time Carlos was the focus of the band with a largely revolving door of other musicians.

Classic era members went on to found hugely sucessful bands like Journey and fusion band Go.

 Nostalgia Reigns

The bands first three albums were titled Santana, Abraxas, and III.  On April 14th, 2016, the classic lineup issued a new album – IV.  This lineup had not played together since 1972 and included all but the bass player (he died)

As is often the case with exceptional rock bands (e.g. the beatles, stones) you can hear them mature and grow musically through their first 3 or 4 albums .

Amazingly the new Santana album sounds just like what the fourth album would have been in 1972 if they had not separated.  It is complex and powerful but true to the chemistry of the original players.

Often classic lineups reunite but the fire is gone and music stale.  This is not the case for Santana IV.  I strongly recommend giving it a listen if you enjoy the latin rock fusion genre at all.  This album is five star.

Speaking the Language

We have not had a baby in our house for thirty years.  To say I had forgotten what it was like is an understatement.  I am surprising myself by really enjoying the experience.

On arrival home in the evening I first get to follow her on a tour of the house (toddling/crawling).  I have seen drunken sailors walk staighter.  Although she has been here a week the tour is still daily

A couple of months ago, on an Easter visit, she found some chocolate eggs in the basement .  The basement seems a popular place for regular check.  Next year maybe we’ll put the eggs in a diferent place.

Then of course there is always a short time playing games on the ipad, dinner, bath and a personal favorite of mine rubbing lotion on a rash she has.

My daughter does the lotion rubbing, I just hold our granddaughter in place.  As you might guess she is not that interested in being held while bad mommy puts on the cream.  What a mean grandpaw I am.

This leads to the conversation before bed, which continues into the crib sometimes for a hour.  This part is a little frustrating as we don’t speak the same language yet but I am sure the story she is relating is fascinating.

Often in the middle we get a shouted rendition of ” MAMA MEE” which I think translates to “your not paying enough attention, get with it or I am going to throw a fit.”

Or it’s Italian and she wants a pizza.

Were my children this entertaining?

I think the context is a big part of this experience. As a young parent with a lot of balls in the air I did not have time to smell the roses as they say.  This time around I want to relax and enjoy it all.

But they are going to leave, right?

Better or just different

Years ago I carved toys from blocks of wood for my children to play with.   While I would have if Fischer Price had not come along.  Okay so I am not that old.

Playing with my grandaughter the last few days I have discovered childrens entertainment has entered the digital world.  And maybe it is better.

My stock of toddler/ pre-school learning apps and games has reached twenty and seems like I am just getting started.  From peek a boo barn ( a real favorite) to My Tom for toddlers I have to admit there is a broad variety.

Is it better

Real books, where you can turn the pages, and toys you can touch and manipulate ((a toy car, Vroom, Vroom ) will always have some place, however, I definitely see the value in the digital toys.

Combined, old and new,  the most recent generation of kids has the opportunity to broaden their experience.  I would counsel caution though , relative relying on the digital world too much.

Probably the most obvious failing is the generally sedentary nature of these type of activities.  There is some physical activity involved but it is limited.

Exposure and experience with physical beauty, smells and sounds can be duplicated digitally, but really nothing compares with the real thing.

Balance

A common theme through my posts is the value of balance .  Activities at the outdoor playground mixed with the intellectual stimulation of finding a pig in peek a boo barn must be weighted together and both used wisely as your young child discovers the world and travels the journey to adulthood.

(It is corny but I have always wanted to write something like that last sentence.)

Evacuee or refugee

Today’s topic arose from recent events resulting in our oldest daughter arriving suddenly on our doorstep seeking refuge.  For my wife and I, empty nestors since 2006 (ten years), this was a bit of a shock.

This surprise visit was compounded by the grandaughter and son-in-law she dragged with her.  Oh joy , the population of our home more than doubled overnight.  All because of a few  wildfires in Fort McMurray Alberta.

Before the comments start rolling, I definitely have tongue firmly in cheek.  If a little humour is not needed in the face of such an enormous natural disaster, then I don’t know when it is appropriate.

As an aside, on occassion I have been said to be a bit of inappropriate with my humour on occassion.  But hey, I am definitely no Lenny Bruce  (google it if you are not sure who he was).

Evacuee or Refugee

A little browsing of the Internet makes it clear I am not the first to stumble over the distinction between these terms.  For me the confusion arises from the fact evacuees are forced to leave and seek refuge elsewhere, while refugees are forced to leave and seek refuge elsewhere.  Sounds very similar.

And the answer is

Kudo’s to my wife for pointing out that refugees generally have no intention to return.  In fact,  usually they intend for their refuge to become or at least lead to a new home.

Evacuees have every intention to return and rebuild.  This of course is the case for my daughters family or at least I hope so!  For me the sooner the better of course ( just kidding, inner voice).

A sincere thank you

To all those who have opened their homes to strangers ( like our youngest daughter) or helped in some other way, good for you.  Now if we can only get rid of our kids (again).

Using Information

Simply put, data and knowledge are the fundamental inputs to derive information.  In today’s world the data is stored in a digital form, more often or not.

Storing and then extracting , transforming and loading (ETL) the digital data for intent of review and reporting are the basic concepts of information management .

Using Knowledge to Create Information

Knowledge is the most critical part of the information creation process.  The application of knowledge applies across all steps.

While data is a key input to information creation, knowledge is required to understand what data is needed, where it is so we can extract it, rules to transform it to formats and relationships that are meaningful and finally we need to load it into our reporting tools for analysis.

There are no right answers to the interpretation of the data.  As we apply our knowleddge to the groups of data we loaded, the most critical step is being able to explain our conclusions.

That is explain the information we have derived in a way the audience can understand.  Using your knowledge to derive data but being unable to share the information with clarity is of little value.

You personally may fully understand the information at hand, however, if the intent is to drive action based on this information illustrating and getting support for the actions requires getting others to apply their knowledge and derive the same information.

Sometimes this persuasion can require time and perhaps even additional data and the discovery process can become somewhat iterative.

In summary, careful application of your knowledge is often the key to effective use, analysis, and presentation of information.

Step One – Acknowledgement

One of our most important personal behaviours is self awareness.  This is an understanding of your personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions.

Self awareness allows you to assess how others view you and act appropriately.    Building your self awareness capabilities is a key skill  for all but hermits.

Where to start?

With any process, from issue resolution to self improvement, the most crtical step is recognition of the need for change.  Thus acknowledgement is step one.

This concept is key to improving your own self awareness.  The key here is motivation.  Is there a value (or a need ) to make the change.  In the case of self awareness it is very personal.

Most importantly though if you do not recognize a need or value it is unlikely you will take action.  Conversely, if self motivated, the potential for success is high.

What next?

You need to have a clear understanding of the objective.  Improved self awareness on its own is still pretty vague.  Begin with a more detailed definition of what self awareness looks to you.  Focus on the results.

For example, in my case, one result I strive for positive results stemming from is my different approaches to personal interactions.

For some people I interact with creation of a close bond of friendship . For others a looser relationship (e.g. an aquaintance) makes more sense.

Or if  I want to collaberate with a person but am aware there will never be a strong bond, I focus on approaches that will work for both of us. That is satisfy both our needs.

Ultimately, for me the practice of self awareness is a foundational behaviour which enables me to ensure interpersonal relations our pleasurable experiences for me with detracting from others needs.

Stay on the Sunny Side

Although a bit of a generalization, your perceptions are largely inflenced by the dark side or the light side.  You are the one that chooses which perspective forms the underlying framework in any given situation.

A common illustration of the concept  is the question “Is the glass half full or half empty?”  Half full representing the positive perspective while half empty the negative.

Of course there is always the “who cares” just get on with it attitude, In this case the positive or negative frame takes a back seat to achieving the objective.

Why should we care?

How you feel about things impacts your happiness.  Again, although bit of a generalization and definitely an over simplication, positive attitude equals happy while negative unhappy.

So say you are tasked with filling the glass.  Since it is half full it will take less effort to complete the task.  You think, I lucked out on this job and it feels good.

On the other hand , consider the starting point as half empty and the task could be percieved as onerous.  Why do I have to fill this up, it’s going to take so long because it is half empty.  Whoa is me.

You Choose

The key point here is you choose.  This really is about you.  A little change in perspective can work wonders on your personal satisfaction.

Its critical to note there is a time to view things negatively.  The object of this post is not to suggest cover up.  Adopting a positive attitude to feel good about things leads to a false read and could cause problems.

Consider though, in some cases the option to perceive a set of data or series of events negatively, versus optimistically with a positive vent, is the easier  path.  These are the situations where a pause to consider how you feel is recommended. If the positive view can fit – you may want to adopt it.

Using the right currency for your culture

When you travel to another country you expect to make your purchases using the native currency.  For example in Japan you use  Yen and Sweden the Kroner.

If you don’t have the countries currency you can exchange your own at a specified rate and usually a conversion commission is applied.  Or you can use a credit card and when the transaction is processed the friendly card company will convert your purchase cost to your native currency at the rate most beneficial to them.

What about cultural currency

The baseline of a culture for your city, workplace or other organization  (i.e., geographic, corporate, or other grouping) includes distinctive unique behavior standards.  You can think of these behaviors as the foundation for transaction driven currency you will need to spend to operate effectively within the culture.

This concept of “cultural currency”  is very analogous to  monetary currency.  It differs by location and generally to be successful you need to use the right currency.  Basically, the way you behave when using your “cultural currency” needs to map to the local currency, otherwise problems can ensue.

If you move from one culture (for example a work location in the south of your city) to another culture (a different organization in the north of the city) you need to adopt the new cultural currency.

If you try to transact using the currency from your previous culture misunderstandings and other negative consequences can result.

How do I determine the organizations currency?

Cultural currency is based on the standards, values, vision and objective associated with the culture.  You need to be aware of these and understand them in order to spend your currency without incident.

When moving from one culture to another the first weeks need to be spent acclimatizing, studying the behavior standards and associated expectations.  Once this is done, you can start spending the currency without fear of embarrassment or censure.

Which road to travel?

Yesterday my post focused on vision and execution.  This prompted an interesting discussion with some colleagues  about executing against the vision.  What is the best path to your vision?

Assessing the options

Once you know the direction you are heading, i.e., the vision, consider how this tranlates into objectives.  Additionally , if desired, the objective can be further defined defined by specific goals .

Now comes the interesting part, that is planning the trip.  Most often there are several options.  Ultimately you want to select the approach that is most likely to succeed, but consistent with your personal values.

 Consider this analogy

Your vision is a lush green meadow with food aplenty, ameniable weather year round and isolated location ensuring the environmental peace is maintained.

Between your cuurent location and the vision is a large mountain on one side and a river with a bridge on the other.

Your objective is to journey to the meadow.  There are two options:

  • Hike over the mountain trails first up, then down.  A strenuous journey to be sure, time consuming and possibly hazardous
  • Cross the bridge, a short easy trip over the river, and you are there.

Your selection of the path to the object of your vision needs to take the sub-goals into account.  Do you desire to achieve maximum physical exercise?  Is the potential relaxation of the journey itself important and you want it to be prolonged?

Or is quick and easy the best approach, just achieve the objective as fast as possible.

Plan Wisely

Although the analogy is clearly exaggerated, the point is around the value of fully thinking through your  execution strategy as there will always be options and success most often lies with the approach that maps closest to your own goals.

Whats Your Destination?

” Execution without vision is a nightmare”  – Japanese proverb.

Basically if execution refers to actions directed toward a result , if you cannot clearly visualize the result ( preferably before you begin the action) how will you know when to stop?

Arguably,  you can keep acting continuously always hoping to achieve the goal.  That is to say, without having a vision to guide the focus of the actions they are essential wasted.

And the reverse

” Vision without execution is just Hallucination “.  popularly attributed to Thomas Edison but more likely a slightly modernized version of Jefferson’s actual quote.

In this case you can visualize the objective but it will never be achieved.  Goals are not magically achieved and without action your dream is just that, a dream.

Keeping it Simple

Vision and execution are typical business jargon.  In very simple terms this concept can be analogous to taking a trip.

  • The first step is to determine where you are going.
  • Next you craft a plan on how to get there
  • And finally you act on the plan

You could take a trip with no destination ( probably end up as the vacation nightmare) or you could dream about the exotic destination you are going to visit.  Without a plan and then obviously not acting on the plan (because you don’t have one), it will never happen.

(Maybe like Dorothy you could click your read shoes together and mysteriously transport yourself to Kansas – only works well if Kansas was your dream destination)

The simple summary of this post is, the most sucessful way to get your goal is to know what it is and have a clear plan that you are acting on to get there.
