Sincerity

Good customer service requires more than just saying the appropriate phrases and satisfying the customers requests. The quality of being free from pretense, deceit, or hypocrisy must both be true and perceived as such.

I had an interesting experience today well making some adjustments to my policy with a large ensurer.  Although I was assured I was a valued customer and the agents goal was to treat me as such, I perceived this not to be the case.

Make it Real

Today,  I quickly felt the agents script to be phony, geared not at truly satisfying me but more as a screen to prove he was doing his job as prescribed (in case the call was monitored) .

I was just one more call to be walked through smoothly using stock phrases and answers.  On the surface the interaction was polite but really felt unnatural.

Truely satisfactory service requires a high degree of empathy between the responder and requestor.  Key to a positive service experience is understand how you feel and guaging responses on that basis.

Make a Connection

It might  be a bit surprising to say, even if the  objective of your request is met, without experiencing the human connection, (i.e., the agent or advisor really gets you) your overall  satisfaction level will not be great.

When dealing with others remember the best results will always come when you have chemistry with each other (to coin a common acting term.)

Even when encountering a stranger, as a service interaction so often is, focus first on knowing your customer and second on results.  The results actually will flow naturally with this approach.

Stay on the Sunny Side

Although a bit of a generalization, your perceptions are largely inflenced by the dark side or the light side.  You are the one that chooses which perspective forms the underlying framework in any given situation.

A common illustration of the concept  is the question “Is the glass half full or half empty?”  Half full representing the positive perspective while half empty the negative.

Of course there is always the “who cares” just get on with it attitude, In this case the positive or negative frame takes a back seat to achieving the objective.

Why should we care?

How you feel about things impacts your happiness.  Again, although bit of a generalization and definitely an over simplication, positive attitude equals happy while negative unhappy.

So say you are tasked with filling the glass.  Since it is half full it will take less effort to complete the task.  You think, I lucked out on this job and it feels good.

On the other hand , consider the starting point as half empty and the task could be percieved as onerous.  Why do I have to fill this up, it’s going to take so long because it is half empty.  Whoa is me.

You Choose

The key point here is you choose.  This really is about you.  A little change in perspective can work wonders on your personal satisfaction.

Its critical to note there is a time to view things negatively.  The object of this post is not to suggest cover up.  Adopting a positive attitude to feel good about things leads to a false read and could cause problems.

Consider though, in some cases the option to perceive a set of data or series of events negatively, versus optimistically with a positive vent, is the easier  path.  These are the situations where a pause to consider how you feel is recommended. If the positive view can fit – you may want to adopt it.
