Influencing

I have found a key skill underlying my achievement of pleasure or happiness is an ability to have an effect on the character, development, or behavior of someone or something, i.e.,  influence the result.

This is a two-way street and being blind to the influence attempts of others can derail your own.   Incorporating other peoples needs into the desired outcomes has a much better effect.

Think Past the Objective

A great way to begin influencing is to think past the objective.  For example, if your objective is to schedule a training course, begin with a discussion of the benefits and advantages derived from booking the training.

The subtlety of the approach is to begin the conversation by focusing beyond the course as if the approving/accepting its occurrence is pre-ordained.

Follow this with a confirmation of the approval to proceed.  This may lead to some discussion about details but most often the question of whether to proceed or not will not arise directly.

For the Good of All

It is important not to focus your influence solely on personal goal but go for the win-win.  The objective is for everyone to benefit from the results.

Use influence to attain goals but be receptive to others needs and listen to their feedback.  Often slight modifications to your approach is all that is needed for everyone to be happy.

Influencing skills are a powerful tool for achoeving the common good and while a prime focus will be your needs don’t forget about those of others, you will achieve greater success that way.

There is a way

If the path to your goal is blocked, seek other ways.  Philosophically, I sometimes muse on the fact whether anything is possible.  The answer always seems to be in the interpretation.

For example, while I cannot walk on the water of a lake if I build a hidden underwater catwalk I could look like I was walking on water, although certainly not in the biblical sense.

Effort and Duration

With unlimited effort and duration possibly any goal is attainable however realistically could I avoid death regardless of how much time and effort was involved?

Taxes maybe.

To some extent the limitation to overcoming blockages lie in your mind.  For  example the train in  “The Little Engine that Could” (a popular childrens story) accomplished the impossible task only when it thought it could.

Make the Attempt

For me the key is not having an absolute believe in success, maybe I cannot do everything; However,  making the attempt only requires attitude and that is something completely in my control.

This is not to say your attitude should be without constraint, obviously attempting anything could have some negative concequences.

The point is more; don’t not try to find a way to overcome a blockage for fear of failure, rather take this approach when the risk of concequence is too great.

So can I do anything?  The jury is out,  but I am pretty sure I can make the attempt if motivated to do so.

Reputation

What others believe (their opinion) of you informs your personal reputation.  Reputation generally applies in a broader sense to what groups or collections of people think of you.

Different groups or random collections of people will often view a persons reputation differently and not surprising most often from their perspective.

Who Cares

Reputation is a powerful tool to leverage in achieving your goals.  Ideally you are keenly aware of your own reputation as it applies within a specific group or collection of people.

Understanding the required reputation to support your goals, coupled with an understanding with what your reputation is, allows you to modify your behaviour in ways to enhance your reputation to what you want it to be.

The viewing lens

Of course a critical aspect of knowing how to change your behaviour is understanding the audience.  If you are playing to an audience of folk music fans, playing electrified rock and roll will affect your reputation.

Bob Dylan did exactly this at the Newport Folk festival in 1965.  Predictably, on the whole the initial impact on  Dylans reputation  was negative.

For Dylan, he was fully aware of the effect this behaviour change would have on this audience, however, his personal goals required him to change his reputation.

History supports his decision.  His fame grew and he cemented his reputation across multiple music genres and fan bases.  Dylans approach was simple, he wanted to change his reputation and so planned and executed an approach to do so.

Of course this might not have worked, had that been the case I am pretty sure he would have tried another approach, until he achieved his goal.

More on this topic tomorrow.
