Everyone is from Somewhere

If you want to travel outside of the place you are from a passport is required.  In this context, the place you are from refers to your country of citizenship.

Citizenship is granted if you are born in or move to a country and pass their requirements for citizenship (i.e., immigration).  Why is this?

Living where you want to live

I wonder why I can’t just go and live anywhere on the earth, freely.  Just pick up stakes (a reference to nomads and tents) and go where it pleases me, whenever.

There was a time in the earths history when one could do this, but it was a good idea to take weapons with you in case the people already there were not friendly.

And this is the reason for the current need for passports to control travel or immigration applications to change where you live.  That is the people that were there first believe it is their place.

Of course, if you want to come to my place, you need to be invited or ask nicely.  Arrival by force, a home invasion, is an option but most defend against it, hence why countries have armies.

Don’t Poop in my House

Ownership is human nature.  Thiefs, uneducated and poor are not desirable in my home.  They could mess it up and ruin my orderly and pleasant life style.  And so, we define where your home is, and where mine is and we set immigration rules as to who can come and live in my house.

There are a lot of places on this earth I would like to live for a while but unfortunately I have to marry someone, be rich or smart or have desirable skills to do so.

I guess I could just sneak in and live there illegally but eventually someone would probably build a wall (yah Donald, I’m talking about you) and then maybe I couldn’t leave.  You can check out, but you can never leave (Hotel California).

Technology, Weddings and Traveling with Toddlers and Babys

With great apologies to my loyal audience, my blog has been inaccessible via the internet for week and a bit.  Relative to technology, I have learned over the years, never change anything.

My home computing infrastructure is extremely complex and fully undocumented.  This is something I probably would not recommend for organizations with some desire for stability, but hey, for me on my own, I will figure it out.

And so it begins

Last week on remembrance day I improved the speed and capability of a networked multi-media receiver and in doing so disabled my entire local area network.  Change is good – hmmm!

Trouble shooting through the long weekend including hardware purchases (improvements all) I actually improved things even further and fixed it all.

NOT!

Off to the Wedding

Thinking all was repaired I flew off (literally) to my favorite son’s wedding (also our only son) and booked into a suite with my daughter, son-in law, wife and two grandchildren.

While being in a hotel suite with a baby and a toddler can create interesting moments for shy retiring grand parents, like my wife and I, a lot of fun interactions with the children ensued.

We even shared child care duties with our son (he’s preparing for post marriage child care duties) while the parents went out and partied.

While away, I discovered although I could access my web server without difficulty from my own LAN, not so when on another network.  So musings was offline for a week.

Of course being away I could not trouble shoot the problem.  I fixed it this morning when again physically present and able to coax the infrastructure with sweet talk (and contrary to popular believe I do actually know what I am doing).

Coming back

Our daughter booked the same return flight as us so we could enjoy more time with the grandchildren.  Oh joy.

Actually, it was a joy and the real pleasure came with the fact the baby sitting behind us (belonging to someone else) made more noise the whole flight than both our angelic grand children put together.
