Satisfaction Guaranteed

Does the fulfillment of one’s wishes, expectations, or needs and the associated pleasure you derive from achieving what you seek depend on other people and events?

That is, are you able to personally guarantee living a satisfying life?  Is satisfaction within your control or is it dictated by others?  The simple answer is you have absolute control, unfortunately though it is probably a bit more complex.

Freedom to Interpret

No doubt your own thoughts and perceptions are influenced by external factors like the behaviour of others and events outside your control like the weather.

How you view the impact of those external factors can be completely within your conscious thinking abilities to decide.  Are the external occurrences satisfying and what can be done to make them satisfactory?   The answer, your reaction, is yours to control?

Fulfillment

Simply deciding your life events are fulfilling does not make it so.  This probably seems like an unrealistic approach, after all shit  does happen and pretending it does not is a bit myopic.

Well it is true our lives are varied and full of happenings outside our direct prevue, some things distasteful and unsatisfying to us, when taken as a whole can be perceived in a way satisfactory to ourselves.  It is a personal choice.

Two Worlds

In 1968 the band Sweetwater released a song titled “Two Worlds” which highlighted for me some of the thoughts expressed here.

The chorus lines “I can’t stop livin, I never get tired” epitomize the   positive attitude, that when undertake,  guarantees  a full and satisfying life.   It is your choice.

Use your Perspective

The way you see things, how you perceive and react both physically and emotionally is driven by your attitude and can change with the situational context.

Notwithstanding your surroundings or state of mind, with attention and effort your perceptions can be controlled.  This does require conscious and self determined action but it is within your control.  For example adopting the optimistic or pessimistic view.

Play or Work

A basic interesting example of this revolves around our daily activities.  That is, do we perceive them to be work or play and more to the point why is there a distinction.

By definition an activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a purpose or result, often something a person has to do is work.

Play is also activity focused but the meaning of these two words is simply differentiated by the classification of the activity.  Play being activities for enjoyment and recreation rather than a serious or practical purpose.

All in Your Mind

The distinction is subjective and really self determined.  One persons play might be another’s work and vice versa.  We can choose how to view what we are doing.

I would argue we are always doing something and have to., it is the very nature of being. This applies to whether it is for a defined urgent purpose or just to relax, we choose to do it.

Doing nothing is a choice and although it is a circular argument by choosing to do nothing you are in fact doing something.  I find doing nothing challenging, invigorating and enjoyable because I choose to.

Perspective Matters

Although a very simple concept viewing what you are doing as play versus work increases your engagement, enjoyment and effectiveness.

What is wrong with constantly being at play.  It is a more positive state, have fun, enjoy be happy there is no good reason not to and it is your choice.

Circumstance or Choice

It is likely most of us will experience situations or events that cause us great fear or worry.   These dire circumstance  may drive us into a specific course of action.

Usually our desire for positive change becomes stronger as a result of dire circumstances.  These could cause us to act precipitously.  Which in turn could actually worsen the situation.

Take the Time you Need

Making an informed choice that maps to your own perceptions and values will require some dedicated time during which you focus on your needs and wants, it is after all your choice.

Or the pressure of dire circumstances could result in you feeling there is no choice and you will be swept along by the tsunami created by the situation.

While it is true some things external to you are out of your control, your own reaction and actions are always exclusively within your control – you are in charge regardless.

Expediency

Choosing to act according to convenience and practicality despite possibly being outside your value system or personal standards is often a result of giving in to dire circumstances.

My own personal observation is not taking the time to resist, consider options and plan actions accordance with your personal choice rarely ends up with optimum results, in fact just the opposite.

It’s not possible to overcome every adverse situation you encounter reversing the negative and achieving positive results but it is always possible to make the attempt.

The choice is yours

Regardless of circumstances, dire or otherwise, the accountability for your actions and how you behave always lies with you.

Prioritize

Our daily activities include many options.   What we choose to do at any moment is our choice.   In this context, the activity can be related to work, leisure or just rest (sleeping).

Often the environment or other people influence the choice of action to such a strong degree we declare “I had to do it” or “You made me do it”.  This is a fair comment, as overriding influences external to yourself is not always easy but it is not accurate.

Ultimately, it’s up to you

At one extreme, if you are being robbed at gunpoint, it is arguable there is only one right behavioural choice, give the robber what they want.  While that might be the most common response to this situation, different responses have been known to happen (e.g., resistance, attack).

The way you choose to behave or respond in any given situation may well feel like it was situational, often simply because the circumstances dictate it is the best response.

However, notwithstanding all the influences present,  you make the decision.  Whether made in the moment or time is available for consideration having an advance understanding of your priorities can really help shape whatever you decide to do.

Personal Priorities

Personal priorities stem from your personal life goals and values.  In many cases, you will apply these without forethought.  For example in the robber situation, it is very common for our personal value to preserve life to kick in.

For some, preserving personal wealth is a higher priority and the response may be to resist giving the robber what they seek.  Having an advance sense of our priorities can enable us to make better choices.  Or at least be very comfortable in the choice we make.
