Ikigai

The oldest people in the world live in Okinawa Japan.  Studies seeking the reason for this longevity have not been conclusive. In reality, it is probably a combination of things.

One theory is longer lives are simply obtained through the practice of ikigai (roughly translated to “reason for being”).   This is not the meaning of life but rather a very personal internal connection to your own purpose.  Ikigai starts with you.

Retire and Die

I was discussing retirement in general with my son-in-law recently when he commented, “retire and die”.  His intent was to highlight the fact when you retire there is a real possibility your ikigai will be diminished or perhaps disappear entirely.

Often many of us focus on jobs through our lives, until we retire.  Without the job, which probably was our primary reason for being to that point, we need to refocus.

Life focus is not just on activities like golfing, bridge, hiking and so on but needs an underlying purpose to give meaning.  For example,  living on in order to meet your great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and so on.

This goal is not just about the activity of “meeting” someone but rather has a truly emotional and meaningful aspect.  The rationale for meeting your grandchildren is as much for them as it is for you.  It is not just about satisfying a personal emotional desire.

Live Long and Prosper

Longevity can be supported by prosperity.  That is being in a successful, flourishing, or thriving condition.  Purpose is the underpinning of prosperity.

Anniversary Post

I started musings.kerrzone.com blog back on July 19th, 2015 so yesterday was my three year anniversary.  There have been 770 blog posts, an average of 255 per year, so virtually every business day.

From the humble beginning of just 3 to 5 readers for the first couple of months, I now regularly have 50 to 100 readers each day.  My focus has been on interesting random ideas.

Of course the intent was more for my own pleasure in being able to freely say what I think, that is I am not focused on the reader, however, it is nice to know a few find the ideas amusing.

Not everyone agrees

It has not been a surprise to me that not everyone agrees with my random thoughts and ideas.  This has been expressed through the feedback I receive and is always welcome.

Interestingly though, some do agree occasionally.

Running Out of Ideas

Looking back over three years of posts I wonder how I was able to keep on going.  Where do all this random thoughts and ideas arise from.

I must pass a heartfelt thanks to my colleagues at U of A.  Without the robust discussions we engage in regulary I often would have been bereft of ideas. .

Also my readers often passed on their thoughts about this and that and many a post arose from their feedback.  To everyone thank you and I hope you have been enjoying reading these short missives as much as I do creating them .

Hopefully I will soldier on for a while though it will be completely dependent on whether I continue to have something to muse about.
